KENYA’S RESOLVE TO TRANSFORM FOOD SYSTEMS: A CALL TO ACTION AT UNFSS+4

The urgency for a radical global reimagining of our food systems—how we grow, process, distribute, and consume—has never been greater, nor more morally justified. At its core lies a resolute imperative: to secure universal, resilient, and sustainable access to nourishment.

To drive this transformation, tailored financial instruments must be harnessed to uplift smallholder farmers, catalyze agribusiness innovation, and empower a new generation of agri-preneurs. Equally vital are digital platforms such as M-PESA, whose mainstreaming can democratize access to capital, streamline value chains, and unlock untapped potential across the agricultural spectrum.

During the Second UN Food Systems Summit Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+4) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, H.E. President Dr. William Ruto, accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Hon. Senator Mutahi Kagwe, proudly delivered Kenya’s national statement. The address reaffirmed our enduring commitment to overhaul food systems—not through gradual reforms, but through bold and exponential change—anchored in inclusive growth and ecological stewardship.

Kenya stands unwavering in its pledge: our food systems must evolve for the prosperity of our people and the protection of our planet.

The summit convened a distinguished cohort of global leaders, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Ethiopia), Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (Italy), President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia), President Azali Assoumani (Comoros), UN Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Amina Mohamed, and AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, among others. Their presence underscored the profound geopolitical importance and pressing urgency of the moment.

This is more than a summit. It is a movement. And Kenya stands ready to lead.
